We are Mi Maletín, a North Carolina organization seeking to become a non-profit law clinic focused on defending immigrants in removal proceedings.
Mi Maletín aspires to grow into a virtual legal clinic making part of a small but growing network of similar legal clinics in the South who leverage the power of the massive collaborative representation model.
As the first of its kind, Maletín will start by creating technology to not just remotely screen individuals in need of immigration defense, but to gather documents and build cases into a virtual “immigration briefcase” that can follow the immigrant wherever he or she may be forced to go by the immigration system.
Mi Maletín will begin by taking cases internally that are sourced and organized through the created technology, and eventually will grow into a program supported by software that will make it possible to collect and organize the mountain of paperwork necessary to win an immigration case before an individual ever comes into contact with the enforcement system.
Winning every case and improving immigration law through impact litigation starts with changing the defense system from one based on individuals to one that is collaborative, transferable, and organized.
Recognizing the absence of organizations in this space, we are hopeful to uplift the entire immigration ecosystem from the bottom up.
What Are We Doing Now
We are in research mode until the beginning of 2019. Our work was made possible through a grant that allowed the two founders to quit their previous full time jobs in law. If you think we should talk to you, get in touch with us through the contact form.
