Daughter of Immigrants
Atenas Burrola is the Director and Co-Founder of Mi Maletín, a new organization whose mission is to build a dynamic system of effective, mass representation for immigrants in the South. The daughter of Mexican immigrants, Atenas grew up in the small-yet-diverse city of Santa Fe, NM, where she was deeply involved with the Latinx and other underserved communities from a young age, thanks to her mother’s guidance and example. The injustices she witnessed in her community led her to pursue a career in the law, to fight with and for the rights of those who may not have the power, the voice, or the wherewithal to fight for themselves.
On-the-Ground Lawyer for Arriving Immigrants
Atenas believes deeply that we must fight for what is right. She has done Know Your Rights work with the migrant caravans in Mexico, has spent significant time volunteering at “baby jail”—the family detention center in Dilley, TX, and with the Charlotte Center of Excellence, part of a national movement dedicated to winning every meritorious asylum case, every time.
Prior to beginning Mi Maletín, Atenas worked at Human Rights Watch, launched a legal clinic at the Latin American Coalition in Charlotte, and worked as a staff attorney and with unaccompanied minors as an Equal Justice Works justice Americorps attorney at Legal Services of Southern Piedmont (now Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy). She received her J.D. from Stanford Law School and her B.A. magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania.

An Immigrant and Refugee
Attorney Damjan DeNoble is an immigrant himself, having been forced to move to the U.S. from Sarajevo during the period of the wars in the former-Yugoslavia. Along with his family he has experienced the full gamut of the American immigrant experience, from leaving everything behind as a refugee and successfully navigating the visa and citizenship process, to finding success in America. He brings lessons from that experience - including the need or compassion, diligent planning, and patience - to each and every client interaction at Bull City Lawyer.
A Passionate Immigration Advocate
Damjan founded Bull City Lawyer after a successful, nearly decade-long career as a business consultant and legal counsel in Asia, the last four years of which were as a partner with Rubicon Strategy Group, the leading consulting group for multi-national healthcare companies entering and operating in China, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Singapore. Previous to Rubicon Strategy Group, he worked at the law offices of Harris & Bricken pllc, a leading boutique international law firm based in Seattle.
